SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.- Five professionals from four media in the country were winners of the third edition of the Environmental Journalism Award 2018, with a total of RD $ 350,000, in which 30 works competed, 50% more than in the 2016-2017 version.
Journalists Mariela Mejía and Marvin del Cid, of Diario Libre, were selected in the first place when they presented a story, with multimedia resources and high narrative values, based on diverse sources, on the contraband of guaconejo on the border with Haiti.
The second place went to the journalist Suzan Castaños, from CDN channel 37, with work on the impact of garbage on the large municipalities and on tourism. It is the first time that the television format participates in the award, sponsored by CEPM, CESPM, InterEnergy and Ecored.
Lilian Tejeda, Listín Diario journalist, was awarded the third place for the series of reports under the title “A sick metropolis”, on the management of solid waste in Greater Santo Domingo and its impact on water sources.
On this occasion, the Environmental Journalism Award included an honorable mention, which was dedicated to the journalist Yulissa Álvarez, of the weekly newspaper El Dinero, for her report on the search for livelihoods of informal waste pickers while taking care of the environment.
Roberto Herrera, chief executive of CEPM and CESPEM, highlighted the quality of the participating works and considered important for the country the growing interest of the media on environmental topics and sustainability, which makes it possible to speak of socially responsible journalism.
“The power of the media in creating perception, setting agendas and trends is indisputable. By addressing environmental issues more and more frequently and with varied approaches, the media make an important contribution to our sustainable future, “said Herrera.
The event was attended by the president and executive director of ECORED, Rafael Ernesto Izquierdo and María Alicia Urbaneja, respectively, as well as the members of the award jury, Envira Lora, journalist and professor at the communication school of the PUCMM; Omar Ramírez, environmental advisor of the Executive Power and Sixto Incháustegui, of the Board of Directors of the Jaragua Group.
The Environmental Journalism Prize was created in 2015 with the aim of encouraging practicing journalists to carry out work that awakens in society an interest in caring for the environment and sustainability.
