MSMEs Energy Savings

Practical advice for the efficient use of electrical energy in your MSMEs.

There are three important reasons why we must use energy in an efficient manner:

  • Have fewer expenses by reducing the amount of the energy bill.
  • Preserve the natural resources of our planet.
  • Reduce the consumption of fossil fuels used to generate electricity and the subsequent reduction of pollutants that contaminate the environment.

What Increases the Cost of Your Bill?

In our homes there are some appliances that seem to consume a small amount of electricity. However, their frequent or uncontrolled use directly impacts the total amount of the electricity bill, thus reducing the family budget.

Other Reasons that Increase the Bill:

  • Irrational use of energy.

  • Addition of new consumer equipment.

  • Equipment in poor condition.

  • Seasonal changes.

  • Increase in number of home consumers.

  • Appliances that consume energy even if they are turned off.

  • Appliances and Electronic Devices:

    • Whenever possible, buy or renovate your home´s electrical appliances. Look for those that are more energy-efficient (make sure they have the A+, A++ or A+++ energy labels), and provide maintenance as recommended by manufacturer.
    • Unplug appliances when they are not in use. Television standby, or cell phone chargers, microwaves, radios and routers that are permanently plugged in represent unnecessary consumption when not in use.
    • Turn on electrical appliances only when they are in use (it has been proven that 40% of the time the TV is on, no one is watching it).
  • Air-conditioning:

    • For each degree lower that your air conditioner is operating, consumption in your bill will increase by 8%. The Eco mode allows you to save up to 30% in consumption. The suitable temperature for an air conditioner to operate is between 22 to 24 degrees.
    • Take advantage of the coolest hours of the day to lower the temperature of the house, ventilating the house at night and early in the day.
    • Whenever possible use fans, which will cool the environment while consuming less energy. It is also very useful to keep the house protected from the sun’s rays: lowering awnings, closing and tinting windows.
    • Check doors and windows. This is how most of the cold escapes. It is advisable to place piping on all of them.
    • Use a timer on your remote.
    • Combine the use of the air conditioner with a fan, simultaneously. This improves thermal efficiency and reduces consumption.
  • Refrigerator:

    • Check the rubber edges of the refrigerator so that it closes properly and is airtight. Don’t think with the door open. Place it away from the kitchen or other sources of heat.
    • Avoid opening the refrigerator door constantly: every time you open the refrigerator, the cold temperature is lost, and the motor is forced to work harder to bring the temperature up to par. This sole action considerably increases energy consumption. For this reason, it is recommended that when you are going to cook, you take out all the food you will need at the same time or, if you are hungry and do not know what to eat make the decision before opening the refrigerator.
    • Do not put hot food in the freezer or refrigerator: remember that by doing so, the internal temperature rises, and the refrigerator/freezer will be forced to work at its maximum capacity.
    • Your refrigerator should meet your personal needs, and the use you are going to give it.
    • Cover your food. Since most foods contain moisture, when left uncovered they release moisture into the air and the compressor in the refrigerator must work twice as hard to eliminate it. In addition, by covering them you prevent the stored food to absorb odors produced by other foods. This way they are better preserved.
    • Keep the back of the refrigerator clean. It is recommended that this cleaning process should be carried out at least once a year to avoid the accumulation of dust that reduces the performance of the appliance and increases the consumption of electricity. It is also important that you place the refrigerator in a ventilated and cool place (10 cm away from the wall), and away from other appliances that generate heat.
    • Set the thermostat at the ideal temperature. This prevents food from freezing in the refrigerator section.
  • Water Heater:

    • Heating water for showers consumes the most energy in a home (37%). If you have a thermostat, set it at 45°C and use an electric timer that guarantees no more than 20 minutes per use.
  • Clothes Iron:

    • You should only use the iron when you have a considerable amount of laundry pending. It is better to use the iron once than several times a week.
    • Before heating the iron, organize and select the clothes well. Some garments may be able to remain wrinkle-free even with the iron turned off!
    • Ironing clothes involves a good amount of energy consumption. Do not use the iron as a method to dry clothes.
    • It is preferable to unplug the iron if you are going to interrupt the activity.
    • It is preferable to iron during the period that is not within the so-called peak hours.
  • Washing Machine:

    • The washing machine is one of the appliances that consumes the most energy (11.8%), and 14% of the water that we consume.
    • Program the washing cycle according to the amount of clothes you are going to wash.
    • If possible, always use cold cycles to reduce energy intensity. The use of hot water for washing clothes is the number one electricity consumption in a home.
  • Dryer:

    • Choose an energy-efficient dryer. That is, one that has an A or higher energy certification.
    • Clean the filters every time you use it to make sure they are lint-free. This guarantees the efficiency of the dryer.
    • Learn to separate the clothes to be able to select the specific cycle needed. While cotton needs high temperatures, shirts, dress pants, and synthetic fabrics will do just fine with a medium setting. Delicate fabrics cannot be subjected to too much heat, not to mention wool and slippers, which will not withstand the high temperatures.
    • If you have the auto-dry option, activate it. The machine will stop when finished. Newer models include this option or have an alarm to alert us.
    • Fill the machine completely and plan your washes so that this is possible. You will take advantage of all the heat it generates.
    • Spin the clothes well before putting them in the dryer (at more than 600 revolutions per minute). It will save you a lot of drying time.
    • Once running, do not be tempted to introduce more wet clothes. It’s worth waiting for a new cycle or hang them outdoors.
    • On sunny days try not to use this appliance, as it consumes an important amount of electricity. Take advantage of the sun.
  • Lighting:

    • Lighting consumes between five and 25% of the total energy consumed in a home. It will depend on the use of incandescent lamps or high-efficiency bulbs or LEDs. Using low-consuming lamps will allow you to stay within the range of five percent of your monthly lighting consumption
    • Turn off the light when exiting a room.
    • Take advantage of natural light when available.
    • Use the power required according to the space that needs to be illuminated.
    • Light colors are more efficient. Use light colors on the walls and ceilings to make better use of natural light and reduce the use of artificial light.
