CEB presents renewable energy project to President Abinader on Saona Island

- The energy project integrates a hybrid grid isolated renewable system, which includes 1,800 photovoltaic energy storage modules with a capacity of 5 MWh.
- Saona Island has become the first and only island in the hemisphere with 100% renewable energy 24 hours a day.
Saona Island, Dominican Republic. The Bayahibe Electricity Company (CEB) held a meeting with President Luis Abinader to highlight a transcendental milestone in the field of renewable energy.
Rolando González Bunster, president of InterEnergy Group, CEB’s parent company, pointed out that Isla Saona has become the first and only island in the hemisphere with 100% renewable energy 24 hours a day.
The project is based on a hybrid grid isolated renewable system, which includes 1,800 photovoltaic modules and an energy storage system with a capacity of 5 MWh through a battery bank. In addition, smart meters are used to measure daily consumption.
“We want it to be a flagship of clean energy and a reference for other similar projects in the region,” said González Bunster.
With this achievement, Isla Saona is positioned as an outstanding example in the responsible use of sustainable energy sources and demonstrates the commitment of CEB and its allies to promote clean energy solutions for the well-being of the community and the development of the region.
This achievement has been possible thanks to the collaboration between CEB and MIMARENA, who have worked hard to develop a reliable and continuous solar energy system for the island. Since last January, the inhabitants of Isla Saona and its visitors have had uninterrupted access to this clean and sustainable energy source.
The purpose of the project is to guarantee the well-being of the community of this island under a sustainable model focused on conserving this protected environment, which is part of the territory integrated into the Cotubanamá National Park, located in the extreme southeast of the Dominican Republic.
In conjunction with MIMARENA, CEB is working with the community on several lines of action that include a waste management plan, access to drinking water through dispensers that avoid the use of disposable materials, the development of local entrepreneurship linked to sustainable natural resources, the promotion of sustainable fishing through the Island’s Fishermen’s Association, and the implementation of electric mobility with land and sea vehicles to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and lower costs. In addition to providing Internet access.
To facilitate access to Saona Island and promote the use of renewable energy in maritime transportation, CEB has introduced the first solar-powered electric catamaran in the country. With capacity for 30 passengers, this catamaran will be available for trips from Bayahibe to Saona Island.
This achievement represents a major step forward on the road to sustainability and demonstrates the commitment of the government and companies involved in environmental protection and responsible development. Isla Saona has established itself as an example to follow in the responsible use of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable tourism for the benefit of all.
