Almost ready projects will shield the electricity supply in the area
The company reported an investment of more than US $ 140 million in a meeting with opinion leaders.
BÁVARO, La Altagracia.- Three projects of the Consorcio Energético Punta Cana – Macao (CEPM) will be ready in September, seeking to shield the electricity supply in the area against situations of force majeure, such as hurricanes and storms. They will also allow natural gas to be used as fuel to generate energy. The improvements, with an investment that exceeds US $ 140 million, will make it possible to attend any event that occurs outside of our concession area.
The information was given as part of a meeting with members of the press held at the CEPM facilities. “Although today we already have enough generation in our plant to supply all our customers, with these projects we are effectively securing that base generation and preparing for 5 more years of sustained growth,” said Jesús Bolinaga, General Manager of the company.
The event also explained that the failures of the last weeks in the service of the area have their origin in a fire that occurred in September 2017 in the control room of the Sultana del Este plant, located in San Pedro de Macorís . EGE Haina – owner of that plant and main generation supplier for CEPM – has been working on the repair and modernization of the control systems.
During these replacement works, signals have been lost in the auxiliary systems that feed the plant, leaving it without fuel and losing this capacity to send electric power to the CEPM. These replacement works will be completed by the end of May.
“EGE Haina has been an excellent supplier in the years we have worked together, but these repairs have caused serious inconveniences for us and our customers. We are waiting to start up our new turbine, in order to be more resistant to events of force majeure both in the Sultana del Este and in the transmission line that comes from San Pedro de Macorís, “Bolinaga said.
He added that CEPM clients can be assured that the company is doing everything possible to minimize these failures in the present, and that with these works it guarantees its reduction in the future.
