The Consorcio Energético Punta Cana  – Macao (CEPM) is a privately own utility company that generates, transmits, distributes and commercializes energy in the touristic areas of Punta Cana, Bávaro and Bayahíbe in the Dominican Republic, with an available capacity of more than 300 MW.

We deliver energy solutions and reliable complementary services, supporting the sustainable development of our areas of influence.

Through 1,237 kilometers of transmission lines of high, medium and low voltage, the company provides energy to more than 65% of the touristic sector nationwide –over 45,000 rooms- and more than 33,000 residential customers, becoming the main promoter of growth and development in the area for the last two decades.

BEGINNING – The government of the Dominican Republic signed into law the creation of a legal framework to promote the development of the energy sector in the country through national and foreign investors. The Law 14-90 had the goal to improve the energy infrastructure, the essential source for the socio economic growth of the nation. Furthermore, in the 90s the Dominican Republic begun its transformation into a main tourist destination in the Caribbean, with the East region of the country becoming the main attraction for large European and American hotel corporations, that see in the area their opportunity to broaden their beach tourism services.

ESTABLISHMENT – A group of international and local private investors, led by Rolando González Bunster, take on the creation of the Consorcio Energético Punta Cana Macao (CEPM), to provide reliable energy to the touristic area of Bávaro / Punta Cana. And so operations began with a thermal central of Heavy Fuel Oil HFO of 4MW that provided energy to two resorts.

FIRST STEPS – In 1996, the first firm steps were taken to consolidate CEPM as a basic supplier of electrical energy in the area with the installation of a new power station with 4 Wärtsilä motors of 4 MW (three installed in the same year, and another in 1997), thus addressing the contracting the electricity supply with the rest of the hotel facilities that were still partially self-generating (Meliá and Barceló) and, of course, with the new hotel facilities that were beginning to proliferate.

NEW TERMINAL – More hotels and industrial parks are connected to the grid. The new central is inaugurated.

EXPANSION – Resorts with over 1,000 rooms are connected to the grid. The low voltage lines are expanded so they can service El Divorcio, El Guateque and El Escape.

BAYAHIBE – Compañía Eléctrica de Bayahíbe (CEB) a subsidiary of CEPM, is created.

EXTENSION – The grid is expanded and two Warsila groups of 6 MW are incorporated.

THERMAL ENERGY – The Thermal Energy service is introduced to the market.

NEW TRANSMISSION LINE – The 138 kV transmission line is inaugurated.

PREPAID ENERGY – CEPM becomes the first company in the country to provide prepaid energy services.

FIRST WIND FARM – The Quilvio Cabrera Wind Farm is inaugurated, the first of its kind in the country.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS – The Consorcio Energético Punta Cana-Maco (CEPM) acquires the company Servicios TV Satélite MCR and starts with the project of offering telecommunication services in the area through the brand ACTIVA.

IFC – IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and the IFC African, Latin American and Caribbean Fund (IFC ALAC Fund), announced a joint $100 million equity investment to help InterEnergy Holdings (IEH) develop cleaner and more efficient energy sources in the Caribbean and expand operations in Latin America.

BRONZE MEDAL – CEPM takes 3rd place in customer service among Latin American distributors with fewer than 500 thousand customers, recognition bestowed by Comisión de Integración Energética Regional (Regional Energy Integration Commission (CIER), per its acronym in Spanish). Likewise, the company becomes regional reference in Corporate Social Responsability.

SMART GRID – The Company started a project to replace all meters for smart equipment of the highest technology, capable of operating in the prepaid and postpaid modes with remote connection.

BIOMASS BOILER – CEPM inaugurates a biomass boiler with 4 tons of steam per hour for the internal consumption of the Bávaro plant. That same year, the company became the first distributor with all its customers with smart meters. Likewise, CEPM obtains the bronze prize for the second time in the customer satisfaction survey carried out by the CIER.

25 ANNIVERSARY – The company exceeds 30,000 residential customers and has 25 years of operations.

Telemetry

In late 2014 the company embarked on a project to replace 100% of the meters into telemetered units of the highest technology, capable of operating in prepaid or postpaid mode with remote connection.

The project, which ends in 2016 and includes an investment of more than US $ 5 million, will allow customers to view real-time consumption. It will also allow the company to significantly reduce response times and save costs in commercial operations such as cut-offs, reading and reconnection.

Thus CEPM will become the first and only distributor in the country with 100% of customers telemetered.
